To be honest I’m a simple person, simple things make me happy, I was brought up by my mother in the most humble of ways. Although I came from a privileged family, i was thought to live simply. That is why the one thing that annoys me the most are those people who are materialistic and brand conscious.
I don’t understand the obsession that people have with climbing the social ladder, showing off their branded stuff to others. Does it really make them a better person? For me, the answer is absolutely not. That is why I can say that these people are phony, fake and insensitive. They don’t put into consideration that how their brand consciousness makes others feel, how uncomfortable it is hanging out with them. People who tries to level themselves with the way others live their lives even though they can’t really afford it annoys me and I think that it’s disappointing that people tend to live a life full of pretentions in order to fit in to their dream social group.
I kind of noticed this habit with my fellow Lasallians, it’s disheartening how they live their lives in a stereotypical way of trying to be a socialite, and just how other people personify Lasallians as. Instead of breaking the walls of this image and creating a positive one, they are only strengthening it with their attitude and to remain "cool".
I do believe that there is nothing wrong with wanting to indulge yourself from time to time, but showing off your things to others who can’t afford such luxury or just for fun is nonsense really. Also, if this habit compromises one’s financial status and it leaves a person with a lot of debt just because of the fantasy of being accepted by their dream social group, then that person should be a shame of what they are doing.
I strongly believe that it does not make a person any less if he or she cannot afford to buy luxurious stuff. It is their character and honesty of being themselves that would make them more valuable than a million social climbers combine. I hope one day this people wake up and see the error of their ways.
